Terms of Use & Editorial Policy

Please read these terms before using the site. Last reviewed October 2026.

1. About the directory

Real Meat Directory ("we", "us") provides a free directory of businesses that self-declare they sell meat from raised or harvested animals, along with general educational content. "Real meat" is our chosen shorthand for meat from raised or harvested animals. It is not a legal or regulatory category, and it is not a claim that plant-based or cell-cultivated products are "fake." Cell-cultivated products are grown from animal cells; the directory leaves them out by its own definition.

2. Who can be listed, and the "Self-Declared Real Meat" badge

Eligibility rule: a business qualifies if it sells meat from raised or harvested animals and clearly identifies any plant-based or cell-cultivated alternatives it also sells. Selling both doesn't disqualify a business.

Every listing carries this disclosure:

✔ Self-declared listing: This business states that it sells meat from raised or harvested animals and clearly identifies any plant-based or cell-cultivated alternatives. Real Meat Directory has not independently verified individual products.

The badge is not an audit, a product certification, a kosher or halal certification, or a guarantee. Businesses submit their own information. Users should confirm details directly with each business.

How listings are reviewed

When a business submits a listing, we check that the business exists and that it appears to sell meat from raised or harvested animals, for example from its website, public listings or reviews. A person approves each listing before it goes live. Listings are self-declared: we don't visit businesses, test products, or verify certifications, product claims or sourcing.

Report an error, request a correction or removal

Anyone can report an error. Businesses can also claim their listing, and can request a correction or removal of their own listing at any time. Email [email protected] with the business name, the page, and what should change. Every listing will include a "Report an error" link, and there's one in the footer of every page.

When a badge or listing may be removed

Where practical, we contact the business before removing a badge or listing.

Sponsored placements and independence

Basic listings are free. If we offer sponsored placements in the future, they will be clearly labeled "Sponsored." Free listings are never affected by payment: paying doesn't change whether a business is listed, how it's reviewed, or whether it keeps its badge, and we never sell a badge or verification.

Educational content and corrections

Our articles and videos are based on official and university sources, which we cite. Rules change, so each article shows when it was last reviewed. If you spot something out of date or inaccurate, please report it and we'll correct it.

How we use AI

Real Meat Directory is built and run with help from AI tools ("The Real Meat Bots") that help research topics, organize information, draft articles and video scripts, make our videos, build the website and check business submissions. AI can make mistakes, and it isn't an expert or fact-checker, so important claims link to their sources. Read more on Meet the Bots Behind Real Meat Directory.

4. Community-submitted listings, claims, corrections and removal

Last reviewed October 2026.

Community-submitted listings

Anyone can suggest a business. Before we publish a suggested business, we verify that it exists and that it appears to sell meat from raised or harvested animals, using public information such as its website, storefront listings or reviews. We publish only public business information (for example the business name, category, city and state, website, and a phone number or email the business already makes public). We never publish the suggester's name or email.

Community-submitted listings are marked "Unclaimed · community-submitted" and do not carry the "Self-Declared Real Meat" badge, because the business itself hasn't made a declaration yet. When we add a business, we may email its public business address to let it know, with links to view, claim, correct or remove the listing.

Claiming a listing

A business can claim its listing for free. Claiming is never required, and payment never affects whether a business is listed or how it's reviewed. We confirm that the person claiming represents the business, usually by replying to a business email address. Once confirmed, the listing is marked "Claimed by business" and, if the business makes the self-declaration, shows the "Self-Declared Real Meat" badge.

Corrections and removal requests

Businesses can ask us to correct or remove their listing at any time, through the claim form (check "Remove my listing instead") or by emailing [email protected]. We remove a listing promptly once we've confirmed the request comes from the business. Anyone can report an error in any listing using the "Report an error" link.

5. Business advertising

Business advertising (featured listings and showcase opportunities) isn't offered yet. Terms, including pricing and refunds, will be published before any paid option is offered. Interested businesses can email us at [email protected].

6. Advertiser and lister responsibilities

You confirm that the information and images you submit are accurate, that you have the rights to them, and that they don't infringe anyone's rights or make false or disparaging claims about others.

7. Newsletter and videos

The monthly newsletter is free, and you can unsubscribe at any time. Our educational videos are free to watch.

8. Supporting our mission

We don't accept donations yet. If we do in the future, contributions will be voluntary, will be processed by a third-party payment provider, and won't buy any goods, services, listing placement, or advertising. We make no promise that any contribution will be tax-deductible.

9. Educational content

Educational content is general information only and is not legal, medical, religious, or nutritional advice.

10. Limitation of liability

The site is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind. To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss arising from use of the site or reliance on any listing.

11. Privacy

We collect the information you submit through our forms in order to operate the directory. On the business form, your name and private email are used only to contact you and are never shown publicly. On the suggestion and claim forms, the suggester's email and the claimant's name, email and phone are used only to follow up on or verify the request and are never shown publicly. We do not sell personal information.
